He did a decent job keeping the character’s voices dissimilar enough to know who was talking when. Over time, man forgot. Story doesn’t fall away like it does with Renegades, and finding about the Dolphins was quite interesting, good view of how potential ‘uplifting’ of species could go in out future.
Thorough out the book humans learn how intelligent dolphins are and how helpful they can be for the whole community. Readis is in fact sheltering in a sea cave on the Rubicon Riverand inadvertently makes contact with a local dolphin pod when he swims out too far to sea.
If you’ve read the previous two Pern books, you have a good idea of what to expect, and if you haven’t, it stands fairly well on its own. Due to a genetic improvements Dolphins can speak and their language is close to that of current Pern. The story revolves around around this link between Readis and the dolphins as the fact of talking and helping “ship fish” clashes with the hidebound culture of Pern that is already reeling from the discovery of AVIS for more on AVIS, read the parallel book and the projects that evolve from that.
This is the story about how one boy takes it upon himself to reestablish contact with these intelligent beings. Her first novel, Restoree, was written as a protest against the absurd and unrealistic portrayals of women in s-f novels in the 50s and early 60s. The book explores the re-discovery of the dolphins which have sentience and language skills due to a process they were given back on Ta dah!
There was one element about the book that I was less than enamored with and it is kind of a spoiler, so maybe don’t read it if you are planning on picking up this book. Upon safe return to Paradise River, Alemi and Readis tell their story even sharing it with Lord Jaxom of Ruatha Hold when he comes to retrieve sand to use as an ingredient in making glass; a scene detailed in All the Weyrs of Pern.

These were bottlenose dolphins mccaffreey came from earth, or rather their ancestors. Books by Anne McCaffrey. I read this long ago. But to me, these are the things that make the series as a whole stronger. There’s a couple of anecdotes and characters I enjoyed I liked the dolphins and how they’ve carried on tradition. As frequently encountered in teh books, this one is also telling the story of the personal development of a Pernese boy Readis and how he develops an affinity to these wonderful creatures. I adored the dragon books and had great hopes for this one, since she endowed dragons with such wonderful, distinct personalities.

Une bonne petite lecture dans le cycle. And T’lion become the Monaco Bay Weyr’s dolphin liaison, as they remember more words. The storyline with her son going off to make his own hold was like something out of a nine-year-old’s diary “I’m going to run away and make my own hold and live with dolphins and THEN they’ll be sorry”and there just wasn’t anyone in the story I liked, at all. She went from being my favorite characters to being among my least favorite.

Several days after the storm, K’van reports to F’lar and Lessa that Toric is planning to settle holds outside his borders – K’van reveals he had long suspected Toric was up to something, but only recently found evidence when the storm uncovered several hidden sites. The plot focuses primarily on two young characters and chronicles the birth of the Dolphincrafthall and its first Dolphineer.
However, in doing so they accidentally damage Persellan’s medical book, and while they are worrying about that Jayge finds them, and angrily asks why they were more concerned with dolphin welfare than humans.
T’gellan and Mirrim’s opinion of dolphins and T’lion is greatly improved, as Mirrim had previously miscarried twice due to going between while unknowingly pregnant.
